Get DataSource physical extent

In an effort to dynamically select the best data source for rendering, I
would like to determine which datasource's physical extent encompasses the
requested map view. Each datasource describes geographic extent but I'm
looking for the physical extent - units of distance description of the
bounding rectangle.

Is this possible? Is there a better way to do this? I want to accommodate
best rendering (maximum road map detail possible) across the entire globe.

Sorry, it's not possible to determine the extents that road data is
available for MWS.
